Maps & Data
Heat vulnerability index
Understand how differential experiences of temperatures across our city combine with sociodemographic indicators of vulnerability to determine where our residents are most susceptible to heat-related illness and death. Turn on and off layers on the dark list on the left of this app. The layers include heat maps from the 2021 Heat Watch Campaign, socioeconomic census data, and boundaries of Richmond's neighborhoods. Together, these data were used to determine heat sensitivity scores, and two sets of Priority Areas for heat relief intervention based on small town and big city methodologies. The Heat Vulnerability Index will help the city understand where to prioritize heat-relief strategies from the Heat Management Plan and Climate Action Plan.
